Do You Have a Lame Horse But You’re Not Sure Why?

Are You Trying To Figure Out How To Help Your Horse Recover From Lameness or Injury?

If you look back at the lineage of racehorses, you’ll see a distinguished bloodline.

Thoroughbreds – or “hot bloods” as they’re also known – are fascinating, spirited, and intense. They arrived in America from Great Britain in the late 1700s and are a sought-after breed, known for their vibrant personality and competitive, unsinkable spirit.

Because like most horses everywhere, they’re fiercely competitive and driven, and they’re also prone to injury.

Horses are known for powering through those injuries, even if it means enduring pain, to the point of breakdown.

Like any high-performance athlete, they push their bodies to the limit in competition, and they don’t always pump the brakes after they’ve left the racing circuit.

Such was the case for Ivan, a retired racehorse who found his way home but became lame suddenly for no known reason.

How do you assess and help a horse recover from injury, especially mystery lameness?

When conventional medicine fails the animal and its owner, it’s wise to turn to animal communication. Horses, like every animal on the plant, have important messages to share… all you have to do is listen.

After all, who else knows how they feel, what happened, and what they need to feel better?

Time to get it straight from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

Why was Ivan the ex-racehorse in pain?

Ivan was a lovely, sweet-natured, large bay Thoroughbred ex-racehorse.lame horse 3

His owner, Sharon, knew that Ivan was trying to tell her something… but what?

They’d spent so much time together after she rescued him from the butcher block at auction.

She’d retrained him and ridden him for many wonderful years. There was deep mutual love and respect between the two of them.

But suddenly, he began to limp.

Sharon called the vet. But an examination didn’t reveal anything wrong, and Ivan seemed to recover.  So they went on about their work together.

The very next day, Ivan started limping again. Puzzled, Sharon called the vet yet again, who again checked his hoof, did various flexion tests… they did an x-ray…

Nothing.

And Ivan seemed fine, again.

Days passed, and suddenly Ivan couldn’t support weight on his one leg at all. Deeply alarmed, Sharon called me in frustration.

What was she missing? What was the vet missing?

I came to see Ivan and asked for permission to do a Heart Wisdom MRI intuitive scan…using my subtle intuitive sense to go through his entire body using energy.

What can you learn from a Heart Wisdom Intuitive scan?

Communicating with Ivan heart to heart, mind to mind, he shared how his hoof would hurt sometimes when he stepped “wrong”, but at other times it seemed fine with no pain.

The pain was sharp and stabbing when it hurt. He remembered stepping hard on a rock in pasture when he was playing, but couldn’t recall anything else that might have made his hoof hurt.

That helped us know that 1) there had been an injury, and 2) the rest of his body was probably fine so we didn’t need to worry too much about other areas just yet.

Then, I refocused to find the root of the problem.

Scanning deeper and deeper through the tissue and bones and hoof wall, I could sense some swelling, a bit of inflammation… I kept going. And then?

There it was…

A hairline fracture in one of the coffin bones.

It’s what Ivan was trying to tell Sharon all along.

When the hoof was stressed with weight or working or the surface he was walking (or trotting or running) on, the bone fracture shifted and stretched, threatening to break altogether. When the hoof was relaxed and at ease, the pain was gone.

To be sure, I scanned the rest of the leg, the shoulder, the neck, hips, back to see anything else that might be contributing to the issue. But the rest of his body was sound.

Sharon again called the vet back out, but try as he might, he couldn’t see anything wrong with the hoof with his equipment.

Sadly, Ivan suffered from the pain of that increasingly bad fracture for another three months before the vet finally could find the injury with his machines.

The problem was exactly where he had told us it was.

By that time, the fracture was so extreme it was clearly visible in an x-ray and Ivan was bad lame. He had been suffering all this time, doing his best to perform even though he was hurting.

I was heartbroken that Ivan had to suffer for so long… but Sharon was grateful that I had exposed the problem, and apologized for ever doubting me.

Horses will power through painlame horse 2

More than any other domesticated animal, horses will power through the pain. And not necessarily because they’re “pleasers” like a Golden Retriever that wags its tail no matter how bad they feel, or your Siamese cat that purrs even though they are sick.

Horses are hard-wired for survival – to run from the lion no matter how much pain they’re in – and they’ll ignore the signs their body is sending them until they reach the breaking point. They’ll develop arthritis, ulcers, inflammation, and yes, hairline fractures and with no one listening to them. Their only choice is to keep going until they can’t continue.

They do try to tell you when something is wrong. Like Sharon, she intuitively felt Ivan was asking for her help, but like many animal owners she didn’t know how to communicate with him. She wasn’t able to understand his messages on her own.

It’s your job, as their caregiver, to watch for those signs.

If you know your horse is suffering but you can’t identify the root of the problem with conventional medicine, it’s time to talk with them or find someone who can.

Animal communication enriches your relationships

Sharon learned from her experience that having a conversation with Ivan would illuminate her understanding of his struggles so she could partner up and help him feel better.

While horses are among the more stoic creatures, they aren’t the only ones who have information to share with us…

Your cat, dog, parakeet, rabbit, ferret or lizard observe the dynamics in your household and have unique viewpoints with much wisdom to share. They are attuned to the energy in your house, and they pick up signals that might be invisible to you.

Take the time to listen to their input. If you don’t know how to interpret their messages, you can enroll in one of our classes and begin discovering how to communicate with animals yourself.

A lame horse opened the window for Sharon to the wonderful world of communicating with animals… and it changed her life and Ivan’s life for the better.

Is one of your pets displaying abnormal behavior? They are trying to tell you something too.

It’s time to learn how to listen.
