This article was previously published March 26, 2020 and was updated on May 9, 2022 Easing stress doesn’t have to stress you out! Easing stress in times of trouble is one of the most important skills you can have. Being able to do that though? Easier said than done. More bad news is that you transmit to your pet what you’re feeling. When they’re paying attention they always know what you’re thinking, how you’re feeling, and they know when you’re stressed. But it’s so confusing to them because it makes no sense from their viewpoint. Where’s the bear? Is the tiger hiding in the tree? What are we in danger from again? Explain it to me so I can help! Bottom line is: When you’re stressed? They are too. Stress used unwisely and without purpose in a true fight flight survival situation becomes a degenerative energy that takes its toll […]
Read MoreWhat is the Biggest Mistake Dog Owners Make? I just came across this fantastic free online workshop on training a dog from the K9 Training Institute that I recommend that you sign up for right away. This is the first workshop of its kind that is designed to help “normal” dogs like yours have the same level of calmness, obedience and impulse control as service dogs. The workshop was a complete eye-opener for me and helped me understand why regular dog owners often have so much difficulty and frustration training their dogs. via GIPHY Giving Your Dog a Job to Do One of the many things I learned from the workshop is the biggest mistake that most dog owners make with their dogs is that they don’t give their dogs work to do. Just like our two-legged children, our four-legged friends need to be properly restrained and protected when riding inside vehicles. As a matter of fact, more states are enacting laws about how animals must be transported when riding in an automobile. In Hawaii for example, pets are forbidden from traveling on their owner’s lap and in New Jersey, drivers could face fines of up to $1,000 for the “improper transportation” of an animal. The safest place for a human child to ride in a car is in the back seat and the same is true […]
Read MoreIf You Have a Dog, Or Are Getting One, This is For You Dog training is certainly the hardest part of owning a dog, but it can also be one of the most rewarding parts when you do it right. It can be very frustrating having a dog that is not housebroken, barks excessively, keeps pulling on the leash during your walks, doesn’t respond whenever it’s called, or jumps up on people. You’ll be fed up, because it’s pretty exhausting to keep trying to make them listen. You’ll wonder how professional dog trainers help dogs behave exactly the way they (the trainers) want them to. But hiring a trainer can be quite expensive, and to be honest, you don’t really need to. I’ll explain how in a minute. via GIPHY First, let me talk about WHY your dog seems to be so hard to train… The reason you are having […]
