One of my most impactful memories, one that galvanized the belief that I had a special, life-changing gift with animals, – a true animal connection – goes back decades.
I have since embraced the fact that I can communicate with animals, listen to them, learn from them…give them comfort and receive comforting myself.
This particular encounter left me with a profound sense of awe and gratitude…one of my most lasting, memorable animal connections.
The day a baby elephant tried to eat me – sort of…
It was a hot, sunny Texas day, and my parents took me to the petting zoo.
There were goats and chickens, a llama, a pony, and a pig!
And then in the corner, I saw her…
…a beautiful baby elephant as tall as I was.
Like a moth to a flame, I hurried over until we were eye to eye, her deep brown eyes gazing into my blue eyes.
I heard her sweet voice in my head and felt her emotions and thoughts…I made an animal connection.
But what she told me broke my heart.
She said, “I’m lonely.”
That beautiful little creature was profoundly lonely.
She told me that all the humans crowding around her were so confusing…
She was being touched for hours and hours every day by so many people – adults and children alike.
But none of them could hear her questions and concerns.
She was worried, wondering where her mother was…elephant calves can spend up to five years with their mothers before setting out on their own. I doubt this calf was five…she was on her own too soon.
And she was getting hungry too…was the food inadequate at the petting zoo? Or was she too anxious to eat when she had the chance?
Sigh.
But then she felt my love
When she felt my love and concern and caring and knew I could hear her, she reached out in relief and grabbed my arm in her trunk.
All of a sudden, she grabbed me and stuffed MY WHOLE ARM in her mouth, all the way up to my shoulder!
In the blink of an eye, I found myself standing shoulder-deep in an elephant’s mouth!
Oh my gosh!
One little girl screamed and ran away crying, thinking the elephant was going to eat me.
Others started giggling…
I didn’t care.
I stood there with her, suckling my arm gently, smiling as her eyes danced with joy, and I saw her wonderful sense of humor. She was mischievous, for sure…but also wanted a heart and mind connection with another soul.
Our true animal connection and soul-bonding gave us a sense of camaraderie between species.
She was so relieved to have met a kindred spirit, a sister from another mother, and our hearts were lifted as we loved each other.
I felt amazed!
Touched…
I felt humbled and experienced an upswell of gratitude for my gift
The experience humbled me.
And I was delighted that I could bring comfort to her that day because I was open to communicating with animals…
I was willing to make a soul connection and listen to her from a deep part of my heart and mind.
We stayed like that for a long time while the other kids chattered and ran around.
She told me about her day, about her mom.
I told her about my life, too. I was struggling emotionally…dealing with feelings of isolation and misunderstanding.
So was she…and amazingly, we had found one another. We enjoyed the bond…
That was until one of the attendants saw what was happening and pulled me away from her.
I didn’t want to go.
She didn’t want to let me go.
The moment touched me deeply and left my arm and sleeve a soggy mess.
I didn’t care.
What are the animals in your life trying to tell you?
I still remember that experience with a sense of awe, joy, and wonder…and delight.
And over the years, I’ve had countless conversations with horses, birds, dogs, cats…and always felt like I learned something about myself while learning about them.
Animals can be healers – and can be healed – through genuine communication.
If you are open to the possibilities, you can be trained to have those deep conversations with your pets or other animals in your life.
That time at the petting zoo made me realize that the beautiful baby elephant left a lifetime animal connection imprint on my heart.
Try to remember these essential things as you embark on your animal communication journey:
Take time to listen and talk with an animal today…to understand their viewpoints.
Awaken your intuition and open your senses.
Be kind.
Be compassionate.
Keep learning from them; they have much to teach you.
