Do your research before you get a Yorkshire Terrier.

There are so many breeds of dogs that every person can find one that they connect with.

However, too many potential dog owners don’t take the time to research which type will fit with their lifestyle, and it can be frustrating for both the human and the dog.

It’s important to know what you are getting yourself into so that you can be fair to your new dog and yourself.

The Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most popular dogs in the world. They have long and shiny coats and can get up to around 7 pounds.

They love to play and be active and have tons of attitude.

A Yorkie, as they are called, can keep you busy all day long and spend the evening snuggling in your lap on the couch.

Here’s everything you need to know before getting a Yorkshire Terrier so that you know what to expect when you bring one home.

They Require a Lot of Work and Attention

A Yorkie is not the type of dog you can ignore all day and evening between feedings.

They actively seek attention and affection, so you had better be prepared to provide both.

When you are not walking a Yorkie, they will want to play or show off.

They won’t hesitate to get in your face and demand you interact with them.

They are high-energy dogs that require a lot of stimulation to keep them content.

On top of that, they require regular grooming. Yorkies have long coats that can easily get snagged and tangled.

You will need to brush them and groom them regularly on a scheduled basis.

If you are going to bring a Yorkie home, then be prepared to spend a lot of time with your new dog.

They Are Great For Apartments

While Yorkies are very active, they are still a great option if you live in an apartment or small space.

Because they are tiny, they don’t need a lot of room to run around and have fun.

Just make sure to have some toys laid out for them and watch your step.

A Yorkie’s toys tend to end up in places you’d never expect, which can be a tripping hazard.

If you are in an apartment, just be prepared for your space to be a hive of activity when your Yorkie is awake.

This is a good breed for you if you can handle that.

They Don’t Realize Their Own Size

A Yorkie is small, but their confidence and attitude can be huge.

Yorkies don’t realize how small they are and will have no problem confronting a stranger coming to your home or another dog at the park.

As the dog owner, you will need to train your Yorkie to understand appropriate behaviors when meeting new people and dogs.

For example, they will bark a lot when someone comes to the door, and this habit can be frustrating for many dog owners.

Consistent training will help your dog know what is appropriate and when to scale back on the barking.

They Need the Right Diet

Every dog breed has certain things that can threaten their health.

Yorkies have delicate bodies and need a special diet to stay healthy and live their best lives.

They should be given food that is low in fat and high in protein.

In addition, many vets and nutrition experts suggest giving a Yorkie a mix of hard and soft foods to protect their teeth and to avoid “people food” as much as possible.

With the right diet, your pooch can be a part of your family for as long as possible.

They Are Very Fancy

Yorkies love to show off, love to dress up, and love to be pampered.

They are a fancy breed that are a common sight at dog shows.

You’ve no doubt seen a picture or two of a Yorkie with a bow in their hair or wearing a coat, costume, shades, or jewelry.

Their fur is similar to human hair, and it gets very long so that you can style it with a little practice and skill.

Yorkies love to show off, so the more you do to dress them up, the better.

Just remember this when you are looking for Yorkshire Terrier puppies for sale.

You may need to buy clothes and accessories as well.

They Are Stubborn

Yorkies are used to being pampered and doted on.

That makes them stubborn and sometimes insistent on getting their own way.

This might be why some Yorkie owners have trouble housebreaking their puppies.

Crate training is a must with a Yorkie that does not seem to want to go outside to do business.

You can also set up urine pads and litter boxes around your home to encourage your pup to go to certain places.

Don’t give up, though.

The vast majority of Yorkie owners are successful with housebreaking by employing some patience and determination.

Snuggling is Their Favorite

Yorkies love being around people, they love to show off, and they love affection.

They also love comfort and luxury.

That’s why you can expect to spend a lot of time with a Yorkie sitting on your lap, lying next to you in bed, or lying on your feet.

They want to feel close to their family, and they want to give you as many opportunities as possible to show affection.

They deserve it for all of the fun and loyalty they give to you every day.

There are millions of households with dogs in them.

Each one of those dogs has a unique personality to go with the unique makeup of the home and family.

If you think that these attributes of a typical Yorkshire Terrier will be a good fit for you, then take the next step and bring one home.
